AdBlue® is directly injected into the exhaust gas, serving as a reducing agent. Thereby, ammonia is released and subsequently reacts with the nitric oxides on the catalyst to elementary nitrogen and water. Atmospheric nitrogen and water are natural constituents of the air we breathe. Hence, the amount of nitric oxides in the emission can be reduced by 85%. AdBlue® should not be considered a fuel, as it is not injected in the combustion chamber but in the exhaust system.
